15th place for Bühler employees at the World Solar Challenge 201110/27/2011 Uzwil – SER 1 has mastered its trip across Australia with flying colors: 15th place of 37 in the total ranking and “Best Newcomer Award”. The success of the race was amply celebrated in Adelaide on Sunday evening together with the winning Tokai team from Japan. Bühler congratulates the Solar Energy Racers cordially on this great accomplishment. Congratulations to Down Under: The Solar Energy Racers team has made it. After roughly 50 hours of driving time, the Solarmobil crossed the finishing line in Adelaide last Saturday and thus successfully completed the World Solar Challenge 2011 across the Australian continent.
The conditions in the Australian Outback were difficult. The Solar Energy Racers team struggled with bush fires, a blowout, and extremely poor weather conditions. The battery was taxed to its limits due to days of cloudy weather. But all this could not deter the Solar Energy Racers from continuing the 3000-kilometer-race through the Red Continent.
Ranking among the Top 10
Not least, the team certainly finished the race successfully thanks to their intense preparations. SER 1 and team arrived safe and sound in Adelaide on Saturday and secured themselves the 15th place. In the Production Class category, the team ranked third. In this category, vehicles are distinguished which are equipped solely with components readily available in the marketplace, for example tires approved for road use versus special-purpose solar racing tires. As a crowning finale, the Solar Energy Racers were presented the “Best Newcomer Award” on Sunday, loudly acclaimed by the contesting teams.
A day after the end of the race, the team packed SER 1 and the entire equipment in the trailer and one day later shipped it back home in a container. The last team members left Australia on Wednesday. What remains are impressions and memories and the certainty of having just experienced one of the most thrilling adventures in their lifetimes.
