Automated sorting of edamame to China

07/06/2011 Bühler Sortex and Fulong Frozen Foods have joined together to bring automated sorting of edamame to China. The ever increasing popularity of Edamame pods as a snack and the beans as a nutritious food source mean that Fulong Frozen Foods of Fujian Province have had to automate the selection of these high value commodities. Market demand for the highest quality had, until recently, been only satisfied by the use of large numbers of hand sorters. Even in China, the cost of this type of labour has become increasingly expensive and recruiting the required quality of the labour force, more difficult.

Bühler Sortex’s New SORTEX EID range of optical sorters was designed to target a range of frozen fruits and vegetables, including Edamame, where appearance, correct shape and freedom from foreign material are vital.

The installation was commissioned by Bühler China from Wuxi and the layout and ancillary equipment was managed and supplied by local Fujian equipment manufacturer, Longhai Fujian Food Equipment Co. Local support was a vital requirement stipulated by Fulong Foods.

The line started operation at the end of 2010 and the Bühler Sortex technologies deployed; enhanced InGaAs, High definition cameras with two directional product viewing, PROfile (Shape) and Ejection has delivered the quality required with minimal loss of product and a large saving in labour costs.
