The Wizards of Bühler Uzwil06/26/2012 Uzwil – An exceptional scene could be observed in the Bühler factory premises in Uzwil in the early morning of June 25 and 26, 2012, when some 20 fourth-grade students of the primary school of Andwil, Switzerland waited in wizard and police garb for the Bühler employees to arrive. The children accompanied the employees along freshly marked pathways and informed them about the new safety rules in the premises. Employee safety is an important concern of the international Bühler Technology Group. In order to further raise the safety levels in the Bühler premises at the Group’s headquarters in Uzwil, new pathways were marked in the factory premises on the weekend of June 23 and 24. Then Bühler teamed up with a primary school class from Andwil near Uzwil to roll out the new safety rules and train the factory employees. Clothed as wizards and police, 20 fourth-grade students coached the roll-out of the new safety concept in the morning of June 25 and 26.
“Listen and look before you walk”
All Bühler employees whom the students met in the premises were praised for their exemplary conduct – or their attention was drawn to their incorrect behavior. Pedestrians, for example, for using the marked paths, or forklift drivers for observing the new right-of-way rule giving pedestrians priority over vehicles. The assiduous police and wizards rewarded people’s correct conduct with a gift. And the children gave employees who showed particularly praiseworthy conduct during the campaign days a T-shirt with “Safety Leader” printed on it during the final Safety Award ceremony.
Win-win on both sides
The primary school children were trained for their assignment by their teacher Urs Tobler and Bühler Corporate Safety & Environmental Manager Gianfranco Reich. Traffic training is a permanent part of the children’s schooling. By swapping roles, children for once could play the part of a role model. For Bühler, working with the kids was an interesting and likeable way to arouse employees’ awareness of the important safety issue. For safety reasons, Bühler employees were informed in advance that schoolchildren would be populating the Bühler premises during the two days. They were asked to be careful, without however being told about the true background. The exceptional campaign was received with enthusiasm by the Bühler employees.
Why the “Wizards of Bühler Uzwil”?
“Wizard of Oz“ is one of the best-known fairy tales in the USA, comparable in popularity to “Hänsel and Gretel” in the German-speaking countries. It was used as the title of the “Wizards of BUZ – Bühler Uzwil” training campaign because of the similarity of the wording.
Bühler is a global leader in the field of process engineering, in particular production technologies and services for making foods and manufacturing advanced materials. Bühler operates in over 140 coun-tries and has a global payroll of about 8800. In fiscal 2011, Bühler Group generated sales (turnover) of CHF 2131 million.
